Vaccinate California Statement on National Immunization Awareness Month

SACRAMENTO – Throughout the month of August, health and vaccination advocates across the nation will recognize National Immunization Awareness Month. National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM) is an annual observance held to highlight the importance of vaccination for people of all ages. NIAM was established to encourage people of all ages to make sure they are up to date on the vaccines recommended for them. Communities have continued to use the month each year to raise awareness about the important role vaccines play in preventing serious, sometimes deadly, diseases.

Leah Russin, Executive Director of Vaccinate California, issued the following statement in recognition of the awareness month:

“As we recognize National Immunization Awareness Month throughout August, we are reminded of why vaccines are so critical to keep our children and communities healthy. Vaccines protect against serious diseases and save lives, plain and simple. And there is an overwhelming scientific consensus behind that. And in order to increase vaccination rates in California, school aged children will now be required to be up to date on their vaccines – making our schools safer and healthier as our children head back into the classrooms.”

 

Last year, thousands of pro-vaccination parents, doctors, educators, health advocates and others fought to make our schools and state healthier by passing SB277 to help increase vaccination rates. Under SB277, which went into effect on July 1, children first entering daycare, kindergarten, or seventh grade must be up to date on their immunizations or have a medical exemption from a licensed physician.

Agreement Reached on SB276

Vaccinate California and thousands of parents across the state applaud Governor Newsom and Dr. Pan for reaching an agreement to advance Senate Bill 276 and for helping to protect our children from vaccine-preventable diseases. Today’s agreement is a victory for science over fear and for sound public health policy over conspiracy and misinformation. We urge Governor Newsom to sign SB 276 immediately.

Vaccinate California and parents across the state applaud the members of the California state legislature for passing Senate Bill 276 and taking strong action to protect our children and our communities from vaccine-preventable illness. Infants, immunocompromised children, cancer patients, children who have had organ transplants and other vulnerable populations need us all to keep fighting for this bill until it becomes law. We urge Governor Newsom to sign SB 276 immediately to help ensure that fraudulent medical exemptions can be reviewed and invalidated where appropriate and that our children are protected from vaccine-preventable disease in schools.

SB276 Clears the Senate

The revised version of SB276 passed the Senate this morning on a 28-11 vote. Thank you to Dr. Richard Pan, State Senator and the others who have worked humbly and tirelessly to protect our children. SB276 heads to the governor for his signature.

SB276 Advances Another Step

SB276 cleared the Assembly floor this afternoon! Call your Assembly member and thank them! Next, call your senator, because the bill has been amended since the Senate last voted on it, so they need to approve it a second time. And then, call Governor Newsom, who indicated in June that he was willing to sign the bill with the changes that were made to the Assembly version.
